in Bushwick, Brooklyn there is an area where part of the neighborhood is called the Bushwick Collective that functions as an open air street gallery that showcases graffiti & murals painted by artists from all over the world. I was familiar with the neighborhood because the previous year I had attended a event where photographers and models got together and we used the murals in the neighborhood as a backdrops for our photoshoots. This particular year a photographer friend of mine invited me to the Collective’s annual block party where his friend, the person who came up with the idea for the collective in 2011 Joe Ficalora curates the artwork and gains permission for the artists to paint their murals every year. The main time of painting is usually in early June and the Block party is organized to coincide with the completion of the murals. its pretty cool to have a chance to meet and talk to the artists as they complete their murals. The Block Party is headlined by a Hip Hop concert there are street vendors, food trucks and artists of every kind. its a celebration of community, art & music and a great way to spend a summer day.
If you take a walk through almost any neighborhood in New York City you will see some form of art on display. Because as i've mentioned before humans need to be creative and will find innovative and interesting ways to share and display their skills. From wall posters and advertisements on the sides of buildings to full color murals on brick walls and concrete walkways, if like me you enjoy the work of Graffiti artists, Sidewalk Portrait artists, Sculptors and the like this gallery is for you.
